Jesus spoke about money and material possessions
more than he talked about heaven, hell, or prayer.
He noted the relationship between a man's heart
and his wallet, warning, "Where your treasure
is, there your heart will be." This contemporary
retelling of the Rich Young Ruler
brings a fresh look at the relationship between
a person's faith and their finances.
Within the pages of Faith &

"For some time, I grappled with the Faith
and FINANCES idea and responsibility of tithing.
I consulted family, friends and local ministries
on God's expectations and commandments of me. I
am aware of the tithing percentage etc but I am
not always in close and consistent and in communion
with a church, chapel or other Christian edifice.
In other words, I do not attend church often...not
nearly as often as I did while growing up (respectively,
my mother and grandmother were very diligent with
this: two Sunday services, usher meeting, choir
practice, prayer meeting, bible study, you name
it 7 days a week, every week, every year). We were
Baptists, and I grew up in Texas.
"By way of several cities, I now currently
reside in New York City and am finally in a crossroads
of my spiritual growth to want to give tithing,
to want to be obedient, no matter what. A dear older
cousin of mine (much older, she is my mother's cousin)
put it to me plainly one day. We went to the Bible
and read plain scripture, in black & white,
of God's requirements of me. Afterwards she said,
"If you are finding difficulty in giving of
tithes to a church home of which you have none,
then you should give to where you are spiritually
fed.
"I do not currently have a job; my boss
quit her job so I was subsequently downsized over
the recent New Year's holiday. Praise be to God,
we both knew it was a long time coming...I was in
executive human resources and my boss was EVP. Nonetheless,
I have experienced great spiritual growth throughout
year 2009 and seen the differences in my personal
and professional life and opportunities. God has
reached me and I am listening, again. Thank you
for your work. I continue to read and retain the
daily devotions and hope God will continue His presence
in your life and beyond. I am sure we remain in
touch." - C in New York
