Take the Faith & FINANCES Challenge
Calls come at all hours and from many voices. A wife
phones her husband to say she's expecting. An infant
calls from a darkened nursery requesting comfort. An
officer rings in the middle of the night asking the
husband if he's the father of… Calls, they're the
clanging notes of change.
God calls, too, but often His voice is lost among the
clatter of our lives. On our good days, when we're smitten
with a burst of spiritual fitness, we focus our eyes
on the cross, bend our knees in repentance, and strain
to hear Him whisper. We catch a verse, a refrain from
a hymn, or a line from a sermon and wonder, Is God speaking
to me? Then the world turns up the volume. Competing
voices call us away and the whisper falls silent.
Later, someone gives us a book, forwards an email,
or points us to a web site. We read how others have
cast off the golden handcuffs that kept them chained
to the idol of money. We hear how they've learned to
live the abundant life Jesus promised. Not abundance
as in earthly wealth, but abundance of purpose, joy
and love. We decide we want to be free because we know,
deep down, we were created to live large, bold, and
beyond the bounds of the tiny territory we call home.
We're made to make a difference, not a living, so we
read and reflect and decide to take a chance on God
instead of on lottery tickets, stock market tips and
interest-bearing bonds.
We say "yes" to God and step out in faith.
